Service & Technology FAQs
Cataract & Alcon Unity
How is the Alcon Unity 4D system different from regular cataract surgery?
Traditional surgery often uses a "jackhammer" motion to break the cataract. The Alcon Unity 4D system uses optimized multi-dimensional movement that removes the cataract with 3x less energy. This means less stress on the eye and a significantly faster recovery.
Is it true the surgery takes only 5 minutes?
Yes. Thanks to the combination of the Catalys Laser and the Alcon Unity system, Dr. Cyres Mehta is able to complete the actual surgical procedure in under 5 minutes. However, please plan for about 2 hours at the clinic for pre-operative prep and post-operative observation.
What is Thermal Sentry™ and why is it important?
Thermal Sentry is a safety feature exclusive to our new system. It uses an automated sensor to monitor the temperature of the surgical tip. If it senses heat rising, it instantly modulates power to prevent "wound burns," a risk that exists with older, average machines.
Laser Vision Correction (SMILE & LASIK)
Should I choose SMILE or LASIK?
Both are excellent, but the choice depends on your eye's unique "fingerprint." SMILE is "keyhole" surgery (no flap), making it ideal for those with active lifestyles or dry eyes. LASIK is highly customizable and remains the gold standard for a wider range of refractive errors. Dr. Mehta will recommend the best fit after your baseline evaluation.
Will my vision correction be permanent?
Yes. Laser vision correction permanently reshapes the cornea to correct your distance vision. While your eyes will still go through natural age-related changes (like needing reading glasses in your 40s), the correction made for your distance number is permanent.
Is the procedure painful?
Not at all. We use specialized numbing drops so you won't feel any pain during the procedure. You may feel a slight sensation of pressure for a few seconds, but the actual laser treatment is over before you know it.
Educational & General Eye Care
General Eye Health
What is a "Lazy Eye" (Amblyopia) and can it be treated in adults?
Amblyopia occurs when the brain favors one eye over the other, usually due to a high power difference. While it is best treated in childhood, our center uses advanced "Pediatric LASIK" protocols and vision therapy that have shown significant vision improvement even in adult patients.
What are the early warning signs of Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is often called the "Silent Thief of Sight" because it has no early symptoms. However, if you experience frequent headaches, see colored halos around lights, or notice a loss of peripheral (side) vision, you should seek an evaluation immediately. We use Angio-OCT to detect Glaucoma up to 5 years before traditional tests.
Pediatric Eye Care
At what age should my child have their first eye exam?
We recommend a baseline screening by age 1, followed by a thorough check-up at age 3 and again before they start school. Early detection of conditions like squint or refractive errors is key to preventing permanent vision loss.
Does too much screen time really hurt my child's eyes?
Excessive screen time can lead to "Digital Eye Strain" and may contribute to the progression of nearsightedness (Myopia). We recommend the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
Practical/Logistical Questions
Do I need a hospital stay for these surgeries?
No. All our procedures—including Robotic Cataract and SMILE—are performed on a "day-care" basis. You walk in, have the procedure, and walk out the same day.
How soon can I drive or return to work?
Most patients are able to drive and return to light office work within 24 to 48 hours following Cataract or Laser surgery. We will give you a specific timeline during your follow-up visit.
Does Mediclaim cover these procedures?
Cataract and Glaucoma surgeries are medical necessities and are typically covered by most insurance providers. Laser vision correction (LASIK/SMILE) is often classified as cosmetic, though some corporate policies may cover it. Our administrative team can help you with the paperwork.
